يتألف الكتاب من عشرة فصول متسلسلة تاريخيا ، منذ ذكريات زويل بين أروقة دمنهور إلى قاعات ستوكهولم حيث جائزة نوبل . الفصول هي :

1) الخطوة الأولى .

عن بداية حياته في دمنهور ، و عائلته و علاقته بأمه و أبيه .

2) بوابة العلم .

سنواته الجامعية في الإكسندرية .

3) اللقاء الأمريكي .

بداية حياته في أمريكا و سنوات الماجستير في فيلاديلفيا

4) ذهبُ كاليفورنيا .

انتقاله إلى كاليفورنيا و اختياره للطريق البحثي .

آمالي لمصر و أمريكا .

يصعب جدا تلخيص رواية أو سيرة ذاتية  ،

سأضع بعض التعليقات و الاقتباسات لعلها توضح جزءا ً من نظرتي للكتاب .

في البداية أحمد زويل كعالم طبيعي ،، من أفذاذ وفطاحلة العلماء الطبيعيين ، ولكن عندما يدخل زويل كسياسي ، فأنصحك بالابتعاد عنه ، ليس لأن السياسة ليست مجاله الأكاديمي و لكن هو فعلا ليس متمكنا في هذا المجال .

فلا يتشدق علينا زويل بنظرته للعالم و يلقي علينا المحاضارت في كيف ننقذ العالم من الظلم و كيف نمد جسور التواصل بين الحضارات ، وكيف لـ25 يناير أن تسير ، و هو في الوقت ذاته مطبّع مع الكيان الصهيوني الغاصب !!

وكما قلت ، نسمع له ، نحترم رأيه ، ولكن عليه الكثير من الملاحظات في المجال السياسي .

→ ”Perhaps  the  most  valuable  thing  he  taught  me (his father)  was

that  there  is  no  contradiction  between  devotion  to  work  and  enjoyment

of life  and people”

→ “in  my  first  American

class—a freshman  chemistry class during the 1969-70 academic year—

they  looked  at me as though I was  supposed to be their nurse because

they were paying a stiff tuition. That’s another concept I had to learn—

in American private schools we worked for them because they paid the

tuition, but in Egypt we were educating them.”

→ “When I was a child, I thought of  my   Delta town as the center of the

universe, but now I realize how little I know  about the universe. As a

child, I thought I was immortal, but now I recognize how limited a time

we  all have. As  a child,  success  meant  scoring A on every  exam, but

now  I take  it to mean  good health,  close  family  and  friends,  achieve-

ments in my work, and helping  others.”

في الاقتباس التالي يظهر الخلل الكبير في نظرة زويل للعالم ، و للأسف تأثره تأثراً بالغاً بالقيم الأمريكية كما يقول ، وهذه القيم بحق هي الرأسمالية و المادية ، فكما يقول هنا بأننا يجب علينا أن نساعد المحتاجين ليس لأنهم مساكين و فقراء أو لأن طبيعتنها البشرية الحقة تقول لنا ساعد المحتاج و مد يد العون لكل فقير ، ولكن كما يقول زويل : نساعدهم لنكفي أنفسنا من ضررهم علينا .

not  only because of the human costs and suffering,  but also because of their neg-

ative  impact  on  the  world  as  a  whole  !

→ “Success in life may come to anyone at any level in any walk of life,

but whatever the degree or the profession, one’s success is shaped by the

help of a multitude of other people—a team effort. Recognizing this fact,

the haves should help the have-nots. To be part of a civilized country and

a civilized planet, every human should matter. When a human being or a

country or even a region does not enjoy  the benefits  of knowledge and

attains  an underdeveloped  status,  the  consequences  are ugly,  not  only

because of the human costs and suffering,  but also because of their neg-

ative  impact  on  the  world  as  a  whole;  these  consequences  include  a degradation  of social and cultural values as well as an increase in vio-

lence and terrorism.”

→ ” I don’t know all the

reasons for these achievements, but I know that I love what I do and I

have  never  wanted  to  rest  on my  laurels”

→ “Interestingly, this was the only incident of blatant prejudice that I can

remember. But I am aware that such opinions exist in human beings, and

it’s not a question of being Egyptian or being an Arab or being a Muslim.

One could be a Christian against a Jew or a Jew against a Christian, or a

white against a black, or a man against a woman. My philosophy is not

to let such attitudes stop me from what I want to do. I don’t take it very

seriously,  although  as you  can see, I remember  the incident very well.

The point was I had to get on with my work and had to behave properly,

and in the process perhaps even change the opinion of these people. But

on the other hand, if I did nothing but complain and feel sorry for myself,

then I wouldn’t get anywhere.”
